How Wine Glass Engraving Works: Glass Types, Methods and Care

Personalised wine glasses are one of the most popular engraved gifts, but many buyers ask what the glass is made of and how the engraving is actually done. Here is a plain-language guide.

What materials are used for engraving on wine glasses?

Most wine glasses are made of soda-lime glass or lead-free crystal, and both can be engraved. The surface matters more than the type: smooth, glossy, untextured glass takes engraving best, while heavily textured, coated or painted glass may not engrave cleanly.

Common glass engraving methods

  • Hand engraving: a rotary tool with a fine diamond or carbide bit cuts lettering into the surface by hand. This is ideal for calligraphy, names and monograms.
  • Sandblasting: a stencil is placed on the glass and fine abrasive removes the exposed area, giving a frosted look.
  • Laser engraving: a machine marks the glass with a frosted finish and suits logos and repeat designs.

At Lettering Buff we offer both hand engraving and machine engraving, and our wine glass designs are lettered in copperplate calligraphy.

Is glass engraving permanent?

Yes. Engraving is cut into the surface of the glass, so unlike a printed or stickered design it does not peel off. Hand wash with mild soap and a soft cloth to keep it looking its best.

What can be engraved on a personalised wine glass?

Names, initials, dates, monograms, short quotes or special messages. Wine glasses are available as a single piece or a set of 2, and engraved glassware usually takes 2 to 4 business days to make before shipping.
